In a world where disease has been cured, war is a thing of the past, and even death has been conquered — the only way to die is to be chosen by a Scythe. Citra and Rowan are teenagers who have been selected to apprentice to a scythe — a role neither of them wants. When their mentor sets them against each other in a competition with deadly stakes, the teens must learn the "art of killing" while keeping their humanity.
